[All-nighters are plentiful now. Of all the lame options in the Inaba police department, Adachi had to be saddled with the one with an actual work ethic. As in all facets of life, he was just exceptionally lucky. Elbows sliding forward on his desk, Adachi's forehead hits the mountain of papers in front of him with a muffled thud. Going through them will be useless, he knows (and after all, he surely knows best). They won't find their killer in here, wedged between words and fine print text, ink smudged because newspaper is cheap, but if Dojima looked up from his own immersion into the articles, searching so desperately for clues, he might find the culprit sitting across the desk.]

Do we really have to go through all of these again?

[Resting his chin in one hand, Adachi's smile is lazy at best - probably a result of the late hour, and the lethargy that comes with it. He is really of no inclination to do work when he's off the clock. Truthfully, he stayed here only because the other options were hitching a ride back with that one colleague that liked to talk about his girlfriend all the time. Adachi was going to chance lazing around at the office rather than half an hour of that.]

[Which is still a roundabout way of saying that Dojima's aging, but hey, Adachi never claimed for tact to be one of his great strengths. Who knows? Maybe half of his routine was just being an honest idiot. It's the other half that opinions differ on.]

I’m not putting you down for any hours if you’re gonna spend your time slacking. The central office is already on our ass about this case. We’ve gone 3 consecutive weeks now without any progress.

[With a small groan, Adachi's forehead hits his desk, cushioned by reports. Even without overtime tonight, he has enough hours to last him for years, and as a new transfer, it's doubtful he'd really get compensated as much. Dojima grossly overestimated the value of those hours to him. Not everyone's a workaholic like you, Dojima-san.]

You really think going over these papers again is gonna help? Didn't we do that yesterday?

Listen, the bigger this case gets, the harder it's gonna be to crack. We wait any longer and the media's gonna be all up in our ass even more then they are already. There's gotta be something we're looking over here, so cut the crap and lend me a hand already.

Adachi reaches into his own pocket, fishing through one and then another, before he finally finds the lighter in his coat's left side. Dojima makes more use of it than he does, and that's exactly why he carries it around. He tosses it over the table to his partner.]

[Adachi lets out a noise of amusement as he finally gets to his paperwork, straightening them into a neater stack before bringing a few up to eye-level. He leans back in his seat.]

[Jerking at the loud tone of voice, Adachi slumps in his seat after, head lowered and eyes glued to the page. He has pretty much come to expect it by now. Dojima just wasn't the type to even know what a joke was let alone take it. But this was good, he told himself, this was great. As long as he was underestimated, then December would take them all by surprise. He just had to last until then. He didn't have to like it.]
